Shuffle

Walk by dragging one's feet along or without lifting them fully from the ground. Michael Jackson popularized the shuffle in the 80's, a dance characterized by various steps used to travel, spin or glide.

Before applying for a dog, please take a moment to review our Adoption Information & Procedures

Some of the dogs in our program are adopted before we get to know them. Some stay longer but require several weeks to show their character. Some dogs receive additional evaluations and training by professionals if needed.

We work hard to provide as much information as possible, but the process is not perfect. Our goal is to give the dogs the best chance to stay in their home for the rest of their lives so we are genuine regarding what we know about them. For MPR, quality of our placements takes precedence over a quick turnaround.

We do our very best to update the dogs' bios as quickly as we can. In some cases, dogs are adopted before we are able to revise their listing.

Please do not contact MPR via email or messenger to inquire about a dog’s personality and/or temperament, compatibility with other pets, etc. The volunteers in charge of replying to general requests are not the same as those handling and evaluating the dogs. They will not be able to answer your questions.

Missouri Pit Bull Rescue makes no express or implied warranty, representation or promise to the age, health, breed, habits, disposition, behaviors, obedience, or safety of the dogs in our program. Our assessments are subjective and based on information we receive when selecting the dogs for our program, as well as observations and reports from our volunteers and caretakers. Adopters understand that no one can predict how a dog will act or react under all circumstances and situations.

Background Info:

A plea for Shuffle came from our friends at the local pound after the poor little guy had been overlooked for some time during his stay with them. No one knew why he was "walking funny" and he was therefore being overlooked. We immediately took him to our vet for some answers and are happy to report that his condition won't affect his quality of life. (See info below).  Other than that, we have no info regarding Shuffle's upbringing and previous life before his arrival at the city shelter.

Adoption Fee: $150
Breed: Pit Bull Mix
Sex: Male
Age: 1-3 yrs
Weight: 50-60 lbs

Health Condition - SPECIAL NEEDS:

Upon his arrival into our program, Shuffle was diagnosed by our veterinarian with a fairly rare condition  (though more common in certain breeds such as Pit Bull dogs ) called "Cerebellar Hypoplasia".  Note that we did not proceed with extensive medical testing to determine the severity of his condition. It appears to be a mild form and Shuffle is highly functional.

Cerebellar Hypoplasia means that the part of the brain called the cerebellum did not fully develop while Shuffle was growing up. This condition causes him to walk a little funny - He flops his legs and feet, and sometimes walks sideways or even stumbles a bit. A good diet and regular exercise have actually improved his mobility since being with us.

Other than that, Shuffle does not need any special care or medications. Besides his squirrely movements, he is just like any other dog! In fact, we think his special walk is so endearing and a huge part of his charm!

It's possible that Shuffle might develop arthritis later in life, which should be manageable with pain meds, but otherwise, he should live a normal and long happy life.

Physical Description:

Shuffle has soft brown coat with a large white chest, with a touch of white on his snoot. He is a lean boy with the most adorable wonky walk. Shuffle seems to always have that "whatcha doin and can I help?" look on his face. We can tell he loves to observe his surroundings and has the most expressive, charming, and sweet look to his face.

Current Living Situation:

Shuffle is a special guy indeed! He is living at the MPR shelter. Shuffle is overall well behaved in his kennel, with the occasional repositioning of bedding and in playroom during rotations. He has had an occasional potty accident, but has been doing well since adjusting to the new routine and learning how to use his doggy door. It has been reported that he does not care to be in the rain, he likes his paws dry. Shuffle loves to play and loves to be right there with you. He is working hard on his leash manners. He is always happy to see you and have his time out to stretch and play!

Personality:

Shuffle wants to be included in chores and goings on at the shelter. He is a very curious guy. Volunteers have referred to him as a total sweetie pie and absolutely adorable. Shuffle enjoys yard zoomies despite his wonky movements. Volunteers love to watch him move and speak about how it does not stop him. He really seems to love life and enjoys it no matter his condition. He loves his treats and tries incredibly hard to learn all the routines of shelter life, and to offer his loyal heart to you.

Overall, Shuffle is a happy and outgoing guy! He is eager to please and our volunteers have described him as having a well-balanced personality.

Behavior with people:

Shuffle is outgoing and friendly with everyone he meets! He remains well behaved and well mannered when encountering new people.

Behavior with children:

Unknown but with his reduced motor control, we believe Shuffle might be best around adults or bigger kids who he can't accidentally bump and knock over.

Behavior with other dogs:

Unknown. We can not guarantee Shuffle's behavior with another dog in the home. However, at this time, we believe that with slow introductions and guidance from an owner who is knowledgeable about the breed, Shuffle could potentially coexist harmoniously with a compatible female companion who shares similar energies.

Behavior with other animals:

Unknown.

Training:

Shuffle has been learning and continuing show improvements with basic commands such as Look, Touch and of course Sit! The volunteers at MPR have been working diligently with him since his arrival. Shuffle will benefit from continued training with positive reinforcement and brain engaging activities in his forever home

Best Attribute:

Shuffle's "shuffle" is absolutely his most enchanting quirk. His prance as he moves about the property is a heartwarming sight to see. This boy is as special as they come. He has an adoring face that you just want to cuddle. Shuffle would love to dance, prance, or shuffle his way into your heart and home with his peculiar and yet unique walk. This is what makes him especially easy to love.
