Background Info:

With the help of a local outreach organization, Papa Dulce was rescued after being severely injured in a dog fight and left to die by his owner. Papa was chained outside at the time of the assault and couldn't escape the attack of the larger dog. He was almost dead when "Chain Of Hope" found him, and immediately rushed to KCPP where he received extensive medical care. Papa was eventually transferred to a loving and experienced foster home in our program where we are continuing his care.

Papa had sustained serious injuries to both his front legs before being rescued, and he was literally being eaten alive by maggots. One of Papa’s front leg had a large open wound with tendons and bone showing. The poor baby had no energy to even lift his head to try and swish parasites off. Yet, he still thumped his tail happily on the ground when he saw the rescuer, knowing that help had finally come. We’re so grateful that he’s now at MPR getting the care and attention he deserves. We’ll see to it that he is never ever hurt and neglected like that again.

The injuries Papa suffered to his front limbs are almost completely healed now, leaving him some but minimal deficits. Papa still has limited mobility and sometimes needs to be carried around. But his tail never ever stops wagging!

In addition to the injuries he sustained recently, Papa has a few health issues related to bad breeding: Hip dysplasia, allergies and arthritis. His hip bones were actually grounded to nothing and beyond repair. We are working on getting some extra weight off him to help with mobility. We’re confident that he can have a happy life with a good pain management regimen.

Physical Description:
Papa is most likely a poorly bred "American Bully". In addition to the tremendous injuries he received recently, he might also have some inherited disabilities or malformations caused by inbreeding. We suspect Papa has some type of dwarfism. He has the biggest head! His head alone must weigh 50 pounds 🤦

He’s a short stack, chunky little hippo that bears an adorable white cross on his chest. His tail seriously never stops wagging! It’s too cute for words how loving this dog is after all he’s endured.

Current Living Situation:
Papa did a short stint at the MPR shelter where our volunteers fell head-over-heels in love with him. Papa is now living in a foster house set-up for disabled dogs, so he can get the best possible care during his convalescence. Papa is fostered in a home with two human adults, 2 cats, 1 bossy Dachshund and 2 bossy Chihuahua's. ​There is a medium size fenced yard in his foster.

Papa goes to work in a vet clinic with foster mom during the day. He does well on car rides but needs help getting in the car.

His ideal home would be one with minimal stairs. He can go up stairs but is very hesitant to go down and ends up needing help. Foster parents have ramps built to help him get around where there are stairs.

Personality:
This happy-go-lucky, low-rider, heartthrob is super friendly and loves to be with people. He doesn't bark and is overall a quit dog (minus the snoring. lol).

Stubborn at times, he can be a little hard to motivate. Indeed, Papa sometimes plays into his mobility issues - If he knows he can get what he wants without moving, he will. 😉 Don't let it fool you though. When he wants to, Papa runs and wiggles around like a bull in a china shop.

One thing that adds to his mutant charm is the array of little noises he makes when he snorts and yawns. He is absolutely precious and so very sweet.

A couch potato who sleeps a lot but also has a playful side. He likes toys and chewing on things but isn't destructive.

Behavior with people:
Papa LOVES a good cuddle sesh. First thing he did when he got to his foster home was to surprise everyone by "jumping" up on the bed, where he spent the night cuddling with his foster parents. They were immediately smitten. Despite his physical shortcomings, this sweet potato has quickly proven to be impossible to resist.

He is friendly to everyone he meets. We show him off at work to clients all of the time and hams it up. But he can be a very stubborn Bulldog and it takes picking him up and carrying him sometimes to get him to where you want him.

Behavior with children:
He has met kids at the vet clinic and was gentle and well-behaved. We actually cant imagine him having a poor attitude with anyone. He will never be overly athletic however, so a very active home might not be ideal for him. In addition, he might be a little grumpy when it comes to food because to his dismay, he needs to be kept lean.

Behavior with other dogs:
As of now, Papa does very well with the small-sized dogs in his foster home. The dogs are always supervised and separate when no one can keep an eye on them.

Pappy has also met other dogs at the vet clinic where he spends quite a bit of time. He has a very silly and playful attitude towards other dogs. He gets excited around playful dogs and engages the best that he can. Some dogs he's met so far have been a lot bigger than him and are too much at times. Please keep in mind that Papa endured a traumatic ordeal involving another dog before, and therefor we don't want to place him in a home with a dog that would bully him. He may thrive in a home with a laid-back female that would help him learn the ropes of house life.

Behavior with other animals:
Papa has been good with the cats in his foster home. He hasn't shown a prey drive towards anything as of now.

Training:
Housebreaking is in progress. He does better when someone goes outside with him on potty breaks to make sure he does his business before being let back in. He does NOT like being outside. He is not a messy dog and he doesn't constantly have accidents, but he needs a lot of encouragement to go outside and stay outside until done. We have not tested to see if crated he would hold it all day.

Papa does go in crates just fine and isn't noisy or fussy at all. Sometimes he goes in willingly. We are just with him most of the time so a crate hasn't been necessary.

Papa is not leash trained. If he doesn't want to go somewhere, he won't budge. We are going to look for a harness to use on him that will also help lift him when he is in a stubborn mood.

Best Attributes:
His charming looks and personality. He is a big love bug. He loves people and he makes everyone smile and happy. Everyone who meets him just adores him. He is always happy to meet a new person. No one is a stranger to him. He hams it up for everyone.
